Ipomopsis has 27 species and belongs to the phlox family Polemoniaceae. They are closely related to Gilia. They are native from both North and South America, but the main center of distribution is the Rocky Mountains and the south western states of the USA. Mnay of the species have showy flowers, diffrent species have red, blue or white colored flowers. with blue flowers, such as I. multiflora, or red, trumpet-shaped flowers, such as I. tenuifolia.

'Standing Cypress' or 'Scarlet Gilia' (ip-oh-MOP-sis: RU-bruh) Polemoniaceae:

Plants grow 3 to 6 feet tall and produce spike like clusters of bright red colored flowers, the flowers are trumpet shaped and loved by butterflies and hummingbirds. Grow in full sun but will take some shade too. Grow in soils that are Low to moderate in moisture content with plants being drought tolerant. Best to sow in place since plants resent root disturbance, or use deep cell plugs and transplant out when still small.

Zones (5)6-9. Grown as biennials or short lived perennials, self seeds were happy. Native from Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina, Texas.
