'Edelweiss'

A popular alpine plant with spreading rhizomes. The leaves are a bright silver-gray in color and have a woolly appearance with a thick mat of silver hairs. The flowers are surrounded by large attractive silver bracts that form a star-fish shaped 'flower' with the small yellow tinted flowers enclosed in the middle. Native from the Alps of Europe. Best grown in poor soils that are enriched with lime. The surface of the soil should be covered with sand/small rocks. Easy from seed but plants can be short lived.

Zones 4-9. Surface sow small seeds on to moist seed medium and use 55-65F for three weeks, if no germination in 2-4 weeks move to 32-39F for four weeks. Grow plants out on the cool side. 50-65F.

'Palibin's Edelweiss'

These sun loving plants perform best in well-drained, alkaline soils that are not rich (low in nitrogen). This species grows about 8 to maybe 15 inches tall with silver white foliage covered with short thick hairs. Leaves are sharply pointed and narrow growing more or less upright from the stems. The woolly rosette bracts are silver and the flowers are white. A nice alpine plant for the rock garden. Keep dry in the winter. A little easier to grow than L. alpinum. Might be short lived but easy to raise from seeds.

Zones 4-8? Sow seeds thinly, crowding produces slow growth. Surface sow small seeds on to moist seed medium and use 55-65F for three weeks, if no germination in 2-4 weeks move to 32-39F for four weeks. Grow plants out on the cool side. 50-65F. Native from China and other mountain areas of Asia. Surface sow seeds and use 65-72F. Light need for best results, germinates in 5-10 days.

100 seeds.
