Home > Miscanthus
Miscanthus is a genus of 17 species of grasses native from the Himalaya to northern China and Japan. Most are semi tropical plants are not very winter hardy; those in cultivation are winter hardy. Miscanthus sinensis and Miscanthus giganteus are the most common species grown, both are very variable in size and blooming time, they form tufted or shortly rhizomatous clumps with leaves that grow up and then cascade out and down like a fountain. The species can range from 3 to 18 feet tall. They are upright growing, producing tall stems that are topped with silver colored "flowers" and fluffy white seed heads. Old foliage is best cut back to the ground at the end of winter or early spring before new growth begins, they grow best in full sun but will grow in part shade - in to much shade the clumps never become think. Once established, plants are quite drought tolerant. In some localities they have become weedy, and where this is true seed raised plants should not be grown. Plants grow into dense clumps in a few years and sometimes die out in the middle when old. They can be divided every few years, but digging is a very physical activity. In the north regions plants should be planted in the ground at least 9 weeks before frost to establish a good root system for winter. The raw seeds are medium-small and easy to sow. Germination is easy and seedlings have a moderate growth rate, producing transplantable plants in less than 2 months. They can be started in doors under bright lights or sown in spring to early summer. The seeds should be surface sown, and take 2 to 4 weeks to germinate.
