Paeonia L

This genus of very ornamental, bushy plants has 33-35 species, mainly from Eurasia, two species from North America. There are 21 species in the Central and northern Asia, mainly in the Caucasus but also in the Far East, Central Asia and Siberia. All species are very attractive garden subjects but not all are easy to grow. Cultivars of P. lactiflora Pall. (from the Russian Far East) have been grown in gardens for 100's of years. .

Plants grow 2 to 3 feet tall with attrative foliage and good sized rose-pink colored flowers. The flowers are cup shaped and filled with many yellow stamans. Plants bloom late spring.

[Paeonia daurica]

An uncommon species and one of the smallest peonies in the Mascula Group growing from 24-30 inches tall. Plants have slightly undulated leaflet margins, the foliage has a bluish green cast to it. plants should be grown in a sunny location in rich soils, will perform well in some open shade. This subspecies of P. mascula has smaller, ovoid shaped leaflets making it distinct from the other subspecies. The flowers are a rose red color and are produced in spring. Native of the Ukraine were it is found growing in clearing in woods. This is a diploid species and is clearly differentiated from P. mascula in the number of leaflets/segments of the lower leaves and the shape of the terminal leaflets, while true P. mascula is triploid.
