'Pagoda Penstemon' or 'Narrowleaf Penstemon' or 'Narrow Beard-tongue' or 'Pale-blue Beard-tongue' Scrophulariaceae:

This is a low growing species that normally grows around 12 inches tall, ranging from 6 to 15 inches tall upright growing with slender stems with many narrow leaves. Flowers are generally produce in dense spike-like clusters at the ends of the stems. Best used in groups of five plants spaced out about 10 inches apart. Showy true blue colored flowers that are trumpet shaped above long thin evergreen foliage. Grows best in full sun in nitrogen poor soil on the dry side. Flowering in May to July.

Zone 4-10. Native from Nebraska to North Dakota and Montana were it is found in dry soils. Start around 35-45F, after 5 weeks move to 55-65F, germination is spread out over many weeks. Or sow in the fall and keep out side for germination in the spring and summer. Surface sow the seeds, light helps with germination.

Tall plants from 2 to 4.5 feet, with attractive tubular - bell shaped scarlet colored flowers. Loved by Hummingbirds for its numerous flowers that are well spaced from each other on long branched stems. The multi stemmed clumps have medium green smooth leaves. Sunny borders, rock gardens and naturalized grassy areas. Attractive in the garden and drought tolerant. Avoid rich soils which can promote heavy growth at the expense of flower production. 'Yellow Penstemon'

Soft pastel yellow colored flowers on plants that are more or less evergreen with long smooth foliage. Plants grow 10 to 17 inches tall. The flowers are clustered at the top of the stems and in the tops bracts. The flowers have long tubes with slightly flaring mouths. Blooms in mid to late summer. Grow in moister retentive to dry soils in full sun.

‘Foxglove Beard-Tongue’ Scrophulariaceae:

Here is a new variety having unique foliage coloration that changes during the growing season. In the spring the foliage emerges green, changes to dark maroon-red during the summer, and in fall the color again changes to a blazing red. In spring to early summer plants bloom with clusters of soft lavender-pink flowers on 24 inch tall stems. Plants are compact growing clumps that are drought tolerant , best color in full sun in soils that drain well but are not overly dry. Started early, plants will bloom the first year, flowering stems are good as cutting material and attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds.

'Large Beard Tongue' (pen-STEM-on:gran-dih-FLOR-us) Scrophulariaceae

Plants grow 24-30 inches tall and produce nice large flowers in dense, erect spikes above evergreen rosettes of silvery foliage. The flower colors include pure white, rose, pink, blue and purple, and a number of bicolors. The tall up-right stems have oppositely paired entire leaves that are hairless, with the flowers produced at the ends of the stems in raceme like 'spikes'. Plants bloom the first year if started early. Drought tolerant and hardy if dry over the winter. Can be planting in the boarder and used as a cut flower or mixed in a wild flower garden with Penstemon cobaea, albidus, digitalis, pallidus.

Zones 3-8. The species is a native prairie plant from the central states of the USA. Were it is found growing in dry prairies and barrens from Wisconsin to North Dakota south to Texas and as far East as Illinois. One of the showiest species in the wild and becoming rare - in some locations protected.

'Foothill Penstemon' or 'Chaparral Penstemon'

Looks much like a Dwarf barbatus type that grows 16 inches tall. Nicely used for borders, rock gardens and cut flowers. Better colors than Skyline, with a rich-dark blue and good sized flowers. Plants are also more frost and wind tolerant. Will bloom the first year from an early spring sowing. full sun or light shade. Grows in clumps from fibrous roots. This species is perfect for rock gardens or for planting anywhere good drainage and rich sandy soil is found. Keep faded blooms removed to help encourage continuous flowering.

Zones (5)6-10. Small seeds so surface Sow indoors March 1st Freeze seed for 10 days before sowing. Germinate at 60̊'F/16̊'C starts in 20 days. Flowers 14 weeks from seed. germination. Plants grow into low shrubs, or herbaceous perennials but usually with evergreen foliage. The leaves are bluish-green in color, thick, lanceolate in shape with the ends wider than base. The midribs of the leaves and lower stems are sometimes purplish tinted. Distinctively showy flowers in 1 to 3 foot tall spikes, they are funnel-shaped 3/4in long and bloom different shades of red and pink; typically flowering from February to April. 'Small Penstemon'

Prairie plant native over a wide range in North America in grasslands and mountain settings. The flowers are a medium purple to light blue. Flowering in June. The whirled clusters of flowers are produced on 8 to 16 inch tall stems. The small flowers are crowded at the ends of the stems which are held up above small leaves. Attractive in a mass planting in the perennial boarder or used as a rock garden subject.

'Meadow Penstemon' or 'Rydberg's Penstemon'

Grows 8 to 22 inches tall with semi-shruby growth with semi to fully evergreen leaves. Plants produce blue-purple flowers on taller stems in tight clusters at the ends of the stems. An attractive, easily grown Bearded tongue. This species needs moist soils, unlike most Penstemon, they are not really drought tolerant but the soils should not be boggy (have standing water). Native from the Western USA, including most of the areas west of the Rocky Mountains, were they are found in damp meadows, along stream edges and low areas. Zones 4-10. Start around 40-45F, after a few (4 or 5) weeks move to 55-65F, germination is spread out over many weeks. Or sow in the fall and keep out side for germination in the spring and summer.

'Rocky Mountain Penstemon'

Showy plants that flower 2 feet tall with bright spikes of intense blue-purple colored flowers. The dense blooming spikes are in flower for over five weeks in late spring. Spreading clumps grow to 3 feet wide. An easy to grow Penstemon that is long lived. Foliage is thick with long, thin smooth leaves that have a dull glossy sheen. Will bloom the second year. Use in quick draining soils and keep dry over the winter.

Plants grow 2 to 3 feet tall and have small pink-blue flowers. This species does not have the typical look that one associates with Penstemon, it does not have the spikes of flowers that most do but instead has flowers that open in small clusters along some what lax stems. Best used as hummingbird and Butterfly food in well draining naturalized areas, since the flowers are not that large and showy. Blooms late spring and some times again in the fall. Plants are very drought tolerant once established. Native from the high deserts of California and New Mexico.

Zones 6-10. Surface sow seeds and cover very lightly with some sand or coarse perlite, use 55-68F with germination 2 to 3 weeks, if no germination move to 30-39 F for 6 weeks.
