	'Pagoda Penstemon' or 'Narrowleaf Penstemon' or 'Narrow Beard-tongue' or 'Pale-blue Beard-tongue' Scrophulariaceae: This is a low growing species that normally grows around 12 inches tall, ranging from 6 to 15 inches tall upright growing with slender stems with many narrow leaves. Flowers are generally produce in dense spike-like clusters at the ends of the stems. Best used in groups of five plants spaced out about 10 inches apart. Showy true blue colored flowers that are trumpet shaped above long thin evergreen foliage. Grows best in full sun in nitrogen poor soil on the dry side. Flowering in May to July. Zone 4-10. Native from Nebraska to North Dakota and Montana were it is found in dry soils. Start around 35-45F, after 5 weeks move to 55-65F, germination is spread out over many weeks. 	'Calico Beardtongue' or 'Long-sepaled Penstemon' or 'Smooth Beard-tongue' (pen-STEH-mon cal-ee-COS-us) Scrophulariaceae: Blooms May to June with flowers that are one inch long and a light violet or purple in color with whitish lower lips. Plants grow 12 to 36 inches tall. This is a open woodland species found in the wild along the margins of woodland clearings and the edges of tree lines, thus doing best in part shade. 	'Scarlet Bugler' or 'Hummingbird's Dinner Horn' Many long, bright red colored, tube-like flowers. Short lived perennial species, but an attractive addition to a dry summer garden. Plants grow 2 to 3.5 feet tall and are loved by hummingbirds, blooming in April to June. Plants have hairless leaves and stems, which also has a waxy gray-blue coating that is used to conserve water by retarding transpiration. The leaves have heart shaped bases that clasp around the stems. Grow in gravely, sandy soils with very good drainage, not a plant for areas that receive a lot of rain or have wet soils in fall and winter. It hybridizes with Penstemon spectabilis which has blue-violet colored flowers that are more bell shaped. The hybrids are plants called Penstemon x parishii; they have an intermediate flower shape and color compared to the parents. Heavy soils and those that are moist over the winter will not promote overwintering. Zones 5-10. 	'Large Beard Tongue' (pen-STEM-on:gran-dih-FLOR-us) Scrophulariaceae Plants grow 24-30 inches tall and produce nice large flowers in dense, erect spikes above evergreen rosettes of silvery foliage. The flower colors include pure white, rose, pink, blue and purple, and a number of bicolors. The tall up-right stems have oppositely paired entire leaves that are hairless, with the flowers produced at the ends of the stems in raceme like 'spikes'. Plants bloom the first year if started early. Drought tolerant and hardy if dry over the winter. Can be planting in the boarder and used as a cut flower or mixed in a wild flower garden with Penstemon cobaea, albidus, digitalis, pallidus. Zones 3-8. The species is a native prairie plant from the central states of the USA. Were it is found growing in dry prairies and barrens from Wisconsin to North Dakota south to Texas and as far East as Illinois. 	(P. gentianoides) This form has large, showy, tubular shaped flowers with a wide color range including: white, red, pink, violet, blue and a number of diffrent bicolors. Plants have flowering stems that are 2.5 to 3 feet tall. In most parts of the country they are best grown as annuals but are hardy in zones 9-10 but with dry cover and dry soils they will survive much colder winters. A very choice display.
