'Obedient Plant'

White flowers over 2-3 foot tall plants. Not as invasive as other forms. This selection blooms in mid summer and the roots have a very distinctive scent to them. Useful as cutting material too with good sized flowers over 1/2 the stem. Blooms sooner in the year than the pink forms. Cover seed, germination in 2-3 weeks at F 70.

'Obedient Plant'

Plants have spikes 3-4 feet tall. This selection has a softer color than the other one above, often plants will have purple tinted stems and upper leafs in the fall. Makes a nice cut flower. Sun to part shade. Loves moist soils, but does well in any soil that does not become bone dry. The showy flowers are on swivels and can be pushed around the stems=this is how the plant got it's common name. Blooms late summer into fall. Spreading plants by way of underground stems, grows into 3 foot wide clumps in three to five years.

Zones 3-9. Cover seed, germination in 2-3 weeks at 70F.

'Narrow Leaved Obedient Plant' (fy-so-STEEJ-ee-uh: an-gus-tee-FOH-lee-uh)

Plants have tall, 2 to 3 foot long narrow spikes of lavender colored flowers. Can be used as cut flowers too. Tolerates wet sites, but intolerant of real dry ones. Evergreen winter rosettes of low growing foliage give rise to flowers in late spring/early summer. Spreads by rhizomes and some-times by self seeding. Zone (3)5 to 9. Sow at 55-65ºF for 3 weeks, if no germination move to 24-39ºF for 12 weeks, move to 65-74ºF for germination.

[Dracocephalum Nuttallii] 'Western Obedient Plant'

Rose-pink colored 1/2 inch long flowers, a smaller version of P. virginiana that is not as showy but still interesting in moist soils along a pond, streams or low areas in a wild flower garden.

Zones 3-8. Native from the northern states of Western and Central USA. Plants grow 15 to 20 inches tall.
