Best in moist soils were it spreads out to form wide clumps. For full sun to light shade, long lived, forming woody like underground stems that remind me of Fern roots. The foliage is semi-evergreen and remains green over much of the winter, even here in Minnesota, in exposed locations it will 'freeze off' or if the plants become very dry in summer they will go dormant and most of there leaves will yellow and disappear, with new growth when the plants receive enough water again.
