This is a garden mix of Auricula types. Large flowering and the flowers are in a rich selection of colors. Short stems reach a height of 6-8 inches. Vigorous growing plants, for light shade in well draining but moisture retentive soils. Most plants are evergreen and are hardy. They make good pot subjects too. The genus name comes from the word for 'first' in Latin, named for the very early blooming of some of species.

Zones 3-8.

Surface sow seeds and use 60 to 70f with germination spread-out over a number of weeks. If no germination in 3 to 5 weeks move to the fridge for 3 weeks.

'Moonlight Primrose' (PRIM-yew-luh: al-PEE-kol-uh) Primulaceae:

This species is similar to a smaller versions of P. florindae. The flowers vary in colorwththis selection having yellow ones; the flowers have a powdery-white eye. Plants are good sized and leafy, with flowering stems growing 12 to 18 inches tall, but sometimes up to 3 feet tall. A choice and fragrant plant for the primrose garden. The umbels of flowers crowd the tops of the stems with bell-like flowers. Blooming in early spring with yellow flowers. Grows best in full sun in moister retentive soils, not really a wet soil species. Under hot conditions give the plants some afternoon shade.

Scented flowers are brown-purple in color with yellow eyes. The stems grow around 2 feet tall with semi-evergreen leaves and candelabra type inflorescences. The leaves have finely serrated edges and are anise-scented, they grow up to 10 inches long. For the best plants grow in moist to wet soils in partial shade in humus-rich soils. Blooms Mid to Late Spring.

If no germination in 4 weeks move to to 30-39F for five weeks. Then back to 65F. Keep moist, seedlings start off small so becareful when watering- if you can water from below this will be helpful. As is true for most plants with small seeds, the young plants are small when they first germinate, so for the first month or so keep away from heavy rains.

This is a 'Candelabrum' type with gold colored flowers with orange markings. Rosette forming plants with semi-evergreen leaves. Plants grow around 15 inches tall when in bloom. Best in moist soils in full sun to light shade.

Rich dark violet colored flowers in rounded clusters held up 7inches above 2 inch tall foliage. The leaves are silver tinted with white hairs and have very white undersides, they lay out flat along the ground and grow into round clusters with the flowering stems rising up in the middle. The flowering stems and the flower buds are silver white too. Grow in part sun on moist soils. Blooms in mid to late summer.

This is a deciduous species that grows into rosette-forming clumps. This is a large species reaching up to 4 feet tall and producing clumps up to three feet wide. Though most plants may only grow 30 inches tall. Flowers are lemon - yellow, fragrant and produced in numbers up to 40 per nice upright-stiff stem. Plants bloom late and are native from marshes and streams in South Eastern Tibet.

Candelabra Primrose

A cross between P. bulleyana and P. beesiana. Candelabra type primrose, in a wide range of pastel shades including orange, yellow, pink, purple, or red flowers. The flowers are produced in whorls on the 1 to 2 foot tall stem. Grow in moist soil and can handle wet locations. Use full sun in the north and partial shade in the south. Clump forming plants with medium sized, ovate to lanceolate shaped basal leaves. Blooms late spring into late summer. Does not like to dry out; useful selection for bogs and water gardens, nice along low stream-banks or along the edges of a woodland with organic moisture retentive soil.

Zones 4-7

Sow seeds on top of moist seed mix and seal up pot or tray in a bag-and leave at room temp for three weeks. If no germination, move to the fridge for 45 days, then move to F 55-60 for germination. Use 3 warm (65-80F) 5 weeks cold (30-39F) and 55-65F for germination.
