Black Eyed Susan'

Nice drought tolerant form with yellow-gold flowers, plants grow 2 feet tall and put on a very showy display in mid to late summer, this selection will bloom after 'Goldstrum' is past its peak. Blooms with smaller but fuller flowers than 'Goldstrum' from mid-July to October. A good choice for prairie plantings and the boarder.

Zones 3-9. Germination starts in three weeks at 72ºF . Surface sow seeds, light needed for best results., and is spread out over many weeks. If no germination use a cool period of three weeks.

'Orange Coneflower' or 'Black Eyed Susan' or 'Coneflower' (rud-BEK-ee-a: ful-GI-dah: spee-see-O-sa: new-MAN-ee-eye) can be found under the species name speciosa but now placed as a var of R. fulgida. This selction grows a bit shorter (12 to 14 inches) than 'Goldstrum' and has golden-yellow flowers with black centers. It is another late season bloomer too.

Native from these states in the USA: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. This 2002 All America Selections winner is something new for those that love these heavy blooming plants for the sunny boarder. Unique, fully double and semi-double flowers are 3 to 4 inches wide and come in shades of bronze, red, brown, orange and yellow atop well branched plants that reach a height of 20 to 30 inches. Useful as a cut flower too. Some plants may overwinter, and some self seeding occurs too- though the diversity of colors is reduced. Grow in full sun in well draining soils that are not over fertilized.

Grow as an annual in full sun in well drained soils were they will bloom from mid summer into fall.

'Chim Chiminee' comes in a wide range of rustic fall colors that look spectacular in large late season pots and tubs.
