Saxifraga
A genus of well over 440 species with many hybrids and many more garden clones. Most are
native from the northern Hemisphere and are found in mountainous regions. Most are mat or
cushion foring plants that are perennials but there are a few annuals and biennials (
monocarpic?). Foliage ranges from evergreen to semi-evergreen to deciduous.
There are four general groupings that plants fall into for growing conditions. Some species are
easy to grow and some are very difficult- being very particular about what they will except about
climate extremes. But for-the-most-part they are not more of a challenge than most other alpines
as long as the proper moisture conditions are provided and one does give them the proper amount of or lack of direct sunlight.
