This is a nice short selection that grows half the height of 'Snowflake,' reaching 5 to 6 inches tall and producing large, dense flower heads of a pure white color. The flowers are held just above the needle like, evergreen leaves.

'Candytuft'

These plants grow a little taller/larger than many forms, up to 12 inches with good sized white flower clusters over full, mounding foliage. Showy late spring bloomers with some flowers the rest of the year. Use in full sun with well draining but not overly dry soils, will take some shade but not flower as well and be less compact growing. After flowering, a nice hair cut produces dense clumps. The some what flat, thin needle like leaves are a dark green color and attractive all season long (evergreen in the south - less so as you move up north with out a DRY winter cover) or as an edging along a walk way. Drought tolerant. Provide some winter protection from the sun if you want to keep the winter leaves.

'Kankakee Mallow' or 'Kankakee Globe-Mallow' Malvaceae:

A very rare native north American Mallow with soft to medium pink colored flowers. Plants grow 3 to 5 feet tall and bloom most of the summer. Large leaves are lobed and maple-leaf likein shape. The leaves become smaller as the stems become taller. The over all effect is a spiky clumnp with larger leavesat the bottom and tappering off to a pointy spike at the top. Endangered species from Illinois. Kankakee Co. This will be one of those plants that are more common in cultivation than in the wild. Zones (4)5-7. 'Sword leaf Inula' (in-YEW-la: en-si-FOL-lee-a) ASTERACEAE:

The specie name means 'with sword like leaves'. Nice 1.5 inch wide, yellow colored daisy flower heads blooming from June to late summer. This genus is adapted to moist soils, but should not be grown in wet, soggy soils. They do very well in normal soil that is moisture retentive and well drained with an exposure that is in full sun to morning shade. Plants grow 1 to 2 feet tall and bloom for about six weeks. They are useful filler plants, not domineering in the landscape.

Grown as an annual, but a perennial were the temps do not drop below 50F As a perennial they can grow up to 15 feet tall. 'Slender Blue Flag'

An attractive wild North American Iris with blue colored flowers that are up to 4 inches wide. The flowers have white and yellow markings and bloom from May into July. The long grass-like leaves are very thin, with plants growing 2.5 to 3 feet tall. 'Yellow Flag Iris'

Large broad and long leaves up to 4.5 feet tall, can be grown in sun or half shade. Plants like moist soils and even wet water logged soils. Bright yelow flowers that are held with in the foliage, blooming in June. The foliage on this plant makes a great back drop for other plants.

Zones 4-8, Soak seed in a glass of hot water for three days, changing the water with fresh hot water every 24 hours. Lightly cover seeds and keep moist at room temps for 3 weeks. Place in fridge for six weeks, then move to 65F. Germination starts in one week and can last for many months. Or after soaking sow in a pot with moist seed mix and seal in a plastic bag and put outside in a sheltered spot in fall for germination in the spring.
