'Rough Gay-feather' or 'Blazing Star' or 'Dotted Blazing Star'

< There are 40 or so species in Liatris and I find them all to be interesting and loved by butterflies. This species likes dry open sandy soils and grows over a wide range from Minnesota to Texas. Use in full sun in the perennial boarder or the grass garden, plants grow up to three feet tall and have purple flowers clustered together into 'buttons.' A number of stems come from each plant and bloom for many weeks in late summer. Plants will bloom the second or third year after germination and bloom in late summer. Much loved by Butterflies. I love this plant but it is a little bit on the floppy side-so stake or better yet, grow it mixed in with short grasses and other plants that will support it. I just let mine lean over and do their own thing.

Zones 3-8. Surface sow seeds, light helps with germination, use F 70, germination is spread out over a few months. Grow the seeds in the seed tray for one year and then transplant out in the spring of the next year. Will take two or three years to reach flowering size. The corm like root-stock should be planted around 1 inch deep or less. Be carful during fall clean up that you do not remove the corms from the soil when cleaning up the dried stems.

{Orange Queen} 'Golden Groundsel' (lig-ew-LAH-ree-a: den-TAH-ta)

Clump forming perennials with dark green, large round leaves with purple maroon colored undersides. In mid summer plants have daisy like yellow-gold flowers on thick spikes that rise just above the foliage, with leafy bracts. This species likes a moist, semi shady site, but takes more sun with more moisture in the soil. In hot direct sun-they will wilt, nothing worse looking than a plant with large showy leaves laying on the ground, they pick them selves up again in the evening. Grows 3-3.5 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Blooms in July-Aug. Large showy plants, mix with Astilbe and those grasses and sedges that like some afternoon shade.

The species name means 'toothed' and they are native from China and Japan, hardy in zones 4-8. lower if in a cool spot. This seed should give you a few different color selections to choose from, keep the best and divide them as they become large, great looking plants when used in a mass planting along a pond edge. When grown well- they become very large, bold specimens that command attention when you have visitors in the garden. Takes about 5 weeks at 55- 60ºF, germination is erratic to 6 months or more so keep seed tray moist for one year. The seeds are large and plants grow fast. They have large roots that go deep into the ground and as they age become more tolerant of less than ideal conditions but its best to keep them out of the hot afternoon sun but give them plenty of light in the morning or bright dappled shade.

'Arkwright's Campion' (ark-RIGHT-ee-eye)

Here is a plant with a flower color you either love or hate, the color is a very bright masculine vermilion with dark shaded foliage. Plants grow 8-15 inches tall. The flowers are large and look like a giant version of one of it parents L. chalcedonica except that the flowers are not located in a large rounded heads, but are clustered in small groups along the leaf axis next to the stems. The foliage is a dark bronzy-maroon to purplish in spring, becoming bronze-green in summer. The plants have purple tinted stems that contrast attractively with the vivid flower color. Plants bloom in late June and July. Use in full sun in the North and some shade in the South. They like a well draining, moisture retentive soil.

Zones 3-8. In zones three and four they should be mulched over the winter, because the roots are not fully hardy and can die during very cold weather, which does not kill the plant-they just form very thick multi-stemmed plants that then need to be divided in early spring, otherwise they produce small over crowded clumps with few flowers on stems only 6 inches tall. They work well in the same locations as L. x haageana. If you love bright red flowers, this is one to try: if red is too strong for you, then stay away from this one.

'Haage Campion' (hah-GEE-ah-na)

This Hybrid has large orange to red colored, Maltese cross shaped - flowers on shorter growing plants that reach a height of 10-15 inches tall. Very showy in the front of the border were they will bloom best in full sun in well draining but moisture retentive soils. Blooms in Late June and July. I like them along a fence or mixed in amongst Catmints and Sedum's. After flowering plants can be cut down or you can leave the seeds heads on till they dry and use them as dried cut flowers in a small dried flower arrangement. Plants tend to go dormant in late summer and will return next spring. they are noticeable from a good distance and are hardy in Zones 3-8.(The roots are not so hardy in the north (Zones 3-4) - so plants grow in to thick short clumps after 2 or 3 years and should be divided if you want taller plants)

'Winged Lythrum' or 'Winged Loosestrife' Lythraceae:

Plants grow about 3 feet tall, they have angled stems and pinkish-purple or rose-pink colored flowers. The erect growing, herbaceous to woody based stems are 4-angled. The stems are branching above and glabrous and angles are slightly winged. The 6-parted flowers have petunia-textured petals. The flowers are 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide. This species should be grown in full sun in moister retentive soils. Some reports say that the seeds are eaten by waterfowl - this is not very likely, since the seeds are very small; more likely the fruit capsule are being eaten instead. It blooms from late spring into late summer. The Genus name comes from the Greek word lythron meaning 'blood', and the species name means 'with wings'. A good substitute for the more attractive (but very weedy) Lythrum salicaria, in locations with damp soils.

Zones 4-9

Native from the eastern half of the USA, were it is found growing in wet to moist meadows, along shores, low moist depressions and in moist prairies.
