'Sun Drops' (ee-no-THEE-rah: frew-TIH-koh-suh)

Large very Bright yellow, poppy like flowers on 20 inch tall stems. This is a mat forming type that develops bright red leaves in the fall. Easy to grow in most soil types, blooming in late June, July and early August with some re-blooming into fall. Flowering stems reach a height of 12-18 inches and new stems form an attractive ground cover in late summer and fall. Plants do very well even in dry soils, but will wilt when in bloom if the soil is bone dry. The flower buds have a reddish color befor the flowers open. A choice day-blooming species. The species name means 'Shrub like' Lightly cover seeds with germination in 1 to 3 weeks at F 70. Zones 4-8.

[Oenothera lamarckiana] [Tina James]

Biannual plants grow about three feet tall with large 3 inch wide, bright yellow flowers that unfold and open up in the evening as the sun is going down for the day. The flowers are very scented and loved by moths. Can be short lived but self seeds, but not difficultly. Very nice addition for gardens enjoyed at night, use along walk ways or other areas used at night, put under a outdoor lights for a showy display. Will bloom the secound year, flowering last for about six weeks starting in mid summer.

Zones 3-9. This is a hybrid species of unknown origin, both parents most likely native from western USA. Cover seeds, darkness needed for best germination, use F40-50, germination in 10-30 days. If no germination move to 32-39F for 6 weeks then back to 50F.

'Ozark Sundrops' or 'Missouri Primrose' or 'Glade Lily'

Plants are shorter than other yellow species of Oenothera, reaching a height of 7 to 12 inches. The plants produce many 3 to 4 inch wide, yellow colored flowers in early summer with plants blooming from June - September, and some bloom until hard frost. The flowers open up in the evening and are open all night, were they are visited by moths, and close sometime before noon. Stems tend to be some what lax and plants form large spreading clumps that grow to a height of 5 to 8 inches, with a good amount of basal foliage. The foliage has an undulating habit with long elliptic or lanceolate-shaped leaves. Grow in full sun and space plants out about 12inches apart in well- draining soils with a pH between 5.8 - 6.8 . Drought tolerant. Best results in nutrient poor soils, nitrogen rich soils will produce plants with a lot of soft foliage a fewer flowers. Mixes well with the shorter growing Catmints and Shasta Daisies, effectively used as a mass planting and used as a ground cover amongst large rocks.

Zones 5-8. Native from South Central United States. Cover seeds, darkness needed for best germination, Seeds germinate in less than 2 to 3 weeks, keep seed in constant moisture (but not wet) with temperatures around 70F. After germination grow out seedlings cooler, with 55 to 60F. working well.

'White Evening Primrose'

The normal form of this plant has large white flowers with some pink tones. The softly tinted lilac-pink flowers are very showy and fad to white with age. Plants bloom over a long period from spring to fall and will flower 55 days or so after sowing. This is another plant that spreads by way of runners, they should be used in sandy soils were they can be contained or allowed to spread out. Plants have flowers on them all summer into fall. Flowers are fragrant and 1-1.5 inches wide and cup shaped. Plants grow 12 inches tall or so and start to bloom in the evening. Native from the western states of the USA. Zones 3-7. This selection has very soft lilac to pinkish white cup shaped flowers atop 12 to 18 inch tall plants. Cover seeds, darkness needed for best germination, use F70, germination in 10-30 days.

A day blooming species with large cup shaped flowers that are soft pink and with age turn softer pink or even white. Plants grow any were from 6 inches tall to 2 feet tall, depending on the moisture of the soil. Flowers are fragrant and stay open at night too. This one spreads by way of under ground runners, so is best used in open areas with sandy loam or contained with a deep boarder. Summer blooming in zones 5-10. This species is found growing in these states. Alabama,Arizona,Arkansas,California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina,Tennessee, Texa, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia. 'Oakes' Evening Primrose'

This selection grows 3 to 4 feet tall and produces tall spikes of good sized yellow flowers. Most likely this is O. oakesiana and is a native of north eastern north America were it grows all around the Great Lakes and down the Atlantic seaboard. This species tends to be a biennial and is considered rare or threatened in a few of the states of its natural range.

[Oenothera fruticosa ssp. glauca] 'Sundrops' or 'Primrose' or 'Narrowleaf Evening-Primrose' (ee-no-THEE-ruh: tet-ra-GON-uh) Onagraceae

Long lived perennials with bright sunny Golden-yellow flowers, red tinted flower buds. Blooms early summer. Very showy with 1.5inch wide, bright - almost blinding yellow, cup shaped flowers. Plants are easy to grow and spread-out to form nice dense clumps in a few years, growing about 15 inches tall. Does very well on sandy loam soils and can take many years of neglect in that out of the way location were you can not water but want some thing with a WOW factor display early in the year and long blooming. Plants spread-out a few inches each year in heavy soils and will spread-out more in porous soils. Best in full sun in well draining soils, will grow in part shade but tends to be floppy then. Produces many flowers per stem, after flowering the stems can be cut off to tidy up the display and plants will then produce low growing rosets of foliage, that each can be moved and will bloom the next year. Easy from seed, plants will bloom the second year. A good plant for the 'occasional' gardener that does not have a lot of time to tend to or fuss with their plants or landscape.

'Arctic Poppy' (pah-PAY-ver: rad-ee-KAY-tum)

Plants grow 6 to 10 inches tall and have golden-yellow, cup shaped flowers. Small plants with a good number of flowers, bushy habit. Plants are covered in short, fine silver hairs. Leaves are pinnately lobed to simply divided. Grow in full sun in soils that are gravelly and lime-free. Blooms late spring. The seeds have a crescent shape to them. It's best to start the plants off in cell packs and transplant out into the ground as soon as they have a few leaves. Like most poppies, they resent having their roots damaged during transplanting.
