Many large deep scarlet-red flowers with black markings in their centers. Plants form bushy clumps 1 to 1 1/2 feet tall, and 2 feet wide, The plants often produces more than 15 blooms simultaneously. This species blooms heavily for more than a month and a half. Flowers May-Aug and starts blooming in about 5 weeks after sowing.

'Oriental Poppy'

Large flowers in 7 different colors. Plants grow 24-36 inches tall and have deep roots and are long lived once established. These are clump forming perennials with bristly hairy stems and leaves. Plants form large clumps by way of runners that can be divided after they are done blooming. Very attractive flowers that are showing in early summer. In late summer plants disappear and new growth forms in the fall. Not hard to grow in well drained moister retentive soils in full sun. Like most poppies, they grow best in areas that are not extremely hot and wet or humid in spring and summer.

Plants grow 6 to 10 inches tall and have golden-yellow, cup shaped flowers. Small plants with a good number of flowers, bushy habit. Plants are covered in short, fine silver hairs. Leaves are pinnately lobed to simply divided. Grow in full sun in soils that are gravelly and lime-free. Blooms late spring. The seeds have a crescent shape to them. It's best to start the plants off in cell packs and transplant out into the ground as soon as they have a few leaves. Like most poppies, they resent having their roots damaged during transplanting.

Flowers look like the flowers of Belamcanda. Here is a bigeneric genus between Belamcanda chinensis x Pardanthopsis dichotoma. This is a dwarf strain with 6-petaled 1.5 to 2 inch wide, saucer-shaped flowers in a mix of colors including yellow, orange, pink, purple and red. The flowering scapes growing to 1 to 2 feet tall and blooming in July-August, with some blooming to frost. The sword-like leaves are iris-like. This is a low growing species that normally grows around 12 inches tall, ranging from 6 to 15 inches tall upright growing with slender stems with many narrow leaves. Flowers are generally produce in dense spike-like clusters at the ends of the stems. Best used in groups of five plants spaced out about 10 inches apart. Showy true blue colored flowers that are trumpet shaped above long thin evergreen foliage. Grows best in full sun in nitrogen poor soil on the dry side. Flowering in May to July.

Zone 4-10. Native from Nebraska to North Dakota and Montana were it is found in dry soils. Start around 35-45F, after 5 weeks move to 55-65F, germination is spread out over many weeks. Tall plants from 2 to 4.5 feet, with attractive tubular - bell shaped scarlet colored flowers. Loved by Hummingbirds for its numerous flowers that are well spaced from each other on long branched stems. The multi stemmed clumps have medium green smooth leaves. Sunny borders, rock gardens and naturalized grassy areas. Attractive in the garden and drought tolerant. Avoid rich soils which can promote heavy growth at the expense of flower production. In the south plants form evergreen dense ground covering clumps.

Zones 4-9. Sow seeds at 45-60F, germination in three to five weeks. Higher temperatures tend to delay germination. If no results move to 32-39F for five weeks.

'Calico Beardtongue' or 'Long-sepaled Penstemon' or 'Smooth Beard-tongue' (pen-STEH-mon cal-ee-COS-us) Scrophulariaceae:

Blooms May to June with flowers that are one inch long and a light violet or purple in color with whitish lower lips. Plants grow 12 to 36 inches tall. This is a open woodland species found in the wild along the margins of woodland clearings and the edges of tree lines, thus doing best in part shade. Will take full sun as long as the soil does not become overly dry.

Zones 3 to 9. native from rocky bluffs from Kentucky to Missouri, Alabama and Arkansas.

'Yellow Penstemon'

Soft pastel yellow colored flowers on plants that are more or less evergreen with long smooth foliage. Plants grow 10 to 17 inches tall. The flowers are clustered at the top of the stems and in the tops bracts. The flowers have long tubes with slightly flaring mouths. Blooms in mid to late summer. Grow in moister retentive to dry soils in full sun.

Zones 3-9. In the north make sure plants are dry over the winter. Native from Western USA were it is often found growing in the wild in meadows or by streams, in lowlands and foothills in the Rockies and in Dry sandy open pinewoods.
