Sedum - Stone-crop
Large Genus with over 400 species and many cultivated forms. Most are succulent perennial evergreens or Herbaceous plants or annuals. There are a number of biennials too and a few shrub
like species. This genus is found from all over the world but the highest number of species come
from mountainous regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
Most species are sun loving plants, but a number grow well in open shade or part shade. A few
are true shade plants that will burn if exposed to too much direct sunlight.
Four main groups of plants are grown in the garden.
1) Short growing plants with short stems topped off with flowers that carpet the ground, they tend
to spread to form carpets and make good ground covers and rock garden subjects. Plants do best
in well draining soils with steady moisture, they grow well in thin soils. Small segments that break
off often will grow roots
2) Up-right growing species that grow as clumps, they make nice perennial boarder species and
rock garden subjects.
3) Plants that fall between the two groups above, they have clump like habits with long stems
that are lax, the stems tend to turn upright near the ends as the plants flower but they cascade
(flop)a top the ground or hang down on banks and rock walls.
4) Tender species for green houses and other indoor situations.
