'Reflexed Coneflower'

Long thin leaves with rough hairs. Smooth stems with unbranched flowering stems. Plants have simulare flowers to E. pallida with long reflexed petals, most plants have purplish - red tinted petlas and larger flower heads than the other species. In the past the yellowish colored forms from the eastern parts of the country were called E. atrorubens var paradoxa, in the central USA both species can be found in the same locations. The yellow flowering forms have been given there own species rank and are called now E. paradoxa var. paradoxa. Native from dry praireis and open dry woodlands. Blooming in May to July growing around 30 inches tall. Plants have thick woody tap roots and should be planted were they are to remain.

Zones (4)5-9. Old seed germinates in 7-12 days at 70F. Fresh seed should be Soaked in warm water for 24 hours, sow and cover seeds, darkness needed for best germination. Germination takes place from 10-50 days at F 70. If little germination after 4 weeks move to 30-39F for 6 weeks.

'Yellow Coneflower' or 'Bush's Coneflower'

This is the odd one in the group, while the rest have purple-pink flowers with white forms, this one has yellow flowers, or more accurately yellow disk rays. An interesting addition to the prairie planting or back of the boarder. Plants start off slowly, with the first year spent growing a tap root with only a few low growing, rough leaves produced.

Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours, sow and cover seeds, darkness needed for best germination. Germination takes place from 10-50 days at F 70. If little germination after 3 weeks move to the fridge for 3-4 weeks. You can put the seeds in a plastic baggy or small jar with some moist paper towel and put in the fridge, check them every few weeks and once germination starts, sow all the seeds.

First year blooming plants, though the first they produce mostly normal 'Purple Cone Flower' shaped flowers but when plants bloom the secound year they produce variations of semi to fully double flowers with petals emerging out of the center cones. The petals tend to come out of the tops of the cones and form a two tiered look with normal sized petals at the bottom and smaller petals formed at the tops of the cones. The petal color is a good purplish-pink red shade. Plants grow 3 to 3.5 feet tall.

Zones 3-9. Cover seeds thinly and use 60 to 70F with germination starting in 2 weeks and spread out over a number of weeks.

Plants grow 2.5 feet tall. The purplish-pink colored flower petals are bent upwards and wrap around dark black colored center cones. The foliage is long and thin. Here is a plant that is different than the other Purple Cone flower offered. Will bloom the second year, first year plants grow only a few leaves and put most of their growth into the rootstock.

Wet the glassine packet that the seeds come in so its damp, soak in a cup of water for 5 min and drain off any extra water that has collected in the envelope and put in a plastic ziplock bag and keep in the fridge. 'Great Globe Thistle'

The genus name means 'Like a Hedgehog' in reference to the spiny heads of seeds. This species has large gray-blue flower balls ( thus the species name which means ‘round headed’), plants grow 6 feet tall. Good cut flower subject, grow in full sun. Echinops is a distinctive perennial with some what prickly edged leaves and spherical, pale, off-white flowers. A choice architectural plant for the back of border. The spiny, dark-green, silver haired-cobwebbed covered leaves are silver with very silver-white undersides provide interest from spring until flowering in late summer. This species is a low growing perennial daisy of beaches from central California to southern Oregon. Leaves are some what thick and fleshy. The genus name means 'early old man,' Probably from the early forming white fluffy seed heads. The species is named after a Botanist who collected in South and Central America - Wilhelm Karwinski von Karwin. This woody based perennial forms a carpet 8-10 in. tall. A hardy perennial that will flower in just 3 months from seeding. The beautiful white flowers change to pink as they age and will bloom all summer. Plants will have a number of different colors on them at the same time with new flowers white and as flowers age they turn darker shades of pink. This species has 1/2 to 3/4 inch wide, daisy-like flowers and the plants are outstanding for beds, borders, tubs and hanging baskets.

'Flat Sea Holly' (e-RINJ-ee-um: PLANE-um)

Grows 2.5 to 3.5 feet tall and 18 inches wide but the tops are loaded with the blue prickly flowers and when grown well in groups of three or five plants-spaced out about 12 inches apart -- they form a cloud of blue flowers in mid summer. This large plant can be used were you need something for a dry, sunny location. The flowers can be dried for use in arrangements. They prefer a sandy, well-drained soil with a good amount of organic material. Grow in full sun, but will flower well in some shade -- were they may need a stake because the plants become tall and the stems lax. The Heart-shaped basal leaves are more or less evergreen, with a set of basal leaves in the spring that gives rise to a long stem with few leaves on it at the top. This species is native to Eastern Europe, many silver-blue flower heads ½' long and oval, popular European commercial cut flower. Once plants are established they should be left alone because they have a large white tap root, in the spring root cuttings can be made or you can allow the plants to self sow on open ground.

Zones 4 to 8. Plants will bloom the second year from a spring sowing. Sow seeds onto moist seed mix and keep for 12 weeks at 39ºF (refrigerator) , move to 68ºF for germination.
