This is a hideous smelling weed, that drives cats wild. Off-white colored flowers with pink-violet spots. Plants self seed, this stinker will be loved by your cats. I do not know about its use in the garden - all the other Nepeta that I know of, have some attractive feature to them but this one. The lemon scented type is real nice and I like it very much, cats do too-but not as much. Best used in a location were you can allow it to self seed and not fear that it will take over and smother out any thing else you want. Plants grow 3 to 4 feet tall, forming a bushy clump that blooms in mid summer. Naturalized over much of the US in grassy to disturbed areas, it can even be found in open woodlands. Drought tolerant.

Zones 3-9.

The off white flowers have a light purplish cast to them and sometimes have darker purple spots. Easy to raise, doing well in dry soils and light shade, or full sun. Will bloom the first year (5 to 7 weeks after germination), the new basel folage in the fall is very scented.

Large, medium to dark blue, tubular flowers crown the ends of the stems on this showy plant. Stems are long, up to three feet, held out horizontal to the ground with a semi shrub like look. A nice plant for it's long blooming period, here in Minnesota it blooms from late May till the end of July, after a short period new flowers are formed from the leaf axis all along the stem, which produce flowers until frost. Dead heading promotes even more flowering. This Nepeta is a little diffrent in it's growing requirments as compared to it's relatives. It likes light shade in moisture retentive soils, in full sun the soil needs to stay cool and have good moisture content. Plants work well as an informal low hedge along the woods edge or under open trees or mixed in with daylilies and other larger plants.

Zones 4-9 Native from Japan. Cover seeds, darkness needed for best germination. Use 70ºF, 10-20 days. If no germination, move to the fridge for 6 weeks.
