'Greater Wild Thyme' or 'Mother of Thyme'

A low growing mat forming plant with pinkish to purplish colored flowers in late spring and early summer. Grows 2 to 8 inches tall and 12 inches wide. Nice for a rock wall. Fast growing and hardy and like most of the Tymes likes a dry, well drained soil that is not rich in nitrogen. The some what woody plants can stand some foot traffic too and release a scent when crushed.

'Wild Thyme' (thii-mus: sir-PHIL-lum)

A dwarf prostrate sub-shrub growing to 4 inches tall, with flowers whorled in rounded heads. Very usful for rock gardens, wall plantings or a groundcover. Plant together with Delosperma cooperi, Gypsophila cerastioides, and Sedum spurium. This is a selectiion that produces very consistant 2 inch tall plants with carmine-pink flowers. Blooming from spring through early summer. As a welcome bonus plants have a Lemon scent to the leaves. Grows best on the dry side-wet soils will casue the plants to rot, and in soils that are not overy rich in nitrogen. Full sun to light shade. Native to northern Europe Zones (4)5-8. Seeds are small so do not cover - use 65-70 F with germination in a few days.

This herbaceous perennial grows 3 to 6 inches tall and forms sprawling clump 6 inches wide. Plants with shiny, aromatic dark green leaves and purplish pink flowers in summer. Grow in full sun to light shade, does best in well-drained light-textured soil with low fertility; will tolerates organic and clay soils if well drained and on the dry side. Good drought tolerance and attracts bees.
