Midsummer blooming plants with upright to arching stems. The flowers start off trumpet shaped and modify to a star-shape as they age, the yellow flowers are produced over many weeks and have brown spots. Clump forming plants with large rounded leaves. The leaves 'clasp' around the stems and have a prominent midrib. The flowers are produced at the top of the stems in terminal or axillary, loosely open cymes. A nice addition to the shade garden, this species will take a little dryer soil than the others, which do best in a moisture retentive soil. Lightly cover seeds with moist seed mix, for the first 3-6 weeks keep at F 65. Then move to fridge for 5 weeks F. 29-36 then up to F. 40-45 where seeds will start to germinate. Allow seeds to germinate cool and grow out for the first few weeks cool. Or sow outside in fall with germination in spring.

Zones (4)5-9. This species is native from Japan and China.
