Tulipa - Tulips
Tulips come from a genus of about 100 species in the Lily
family - Liliaceae. They are native from southern Europe, north Africa, and Asia from Anatolia
and Iran, east to northeast China and Japan. The center of diversity for the genus is from the
Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.
Plants are perennial bulbs with few leaves and large spring blooming flowers. They grow from 4
to 30 inches tall. The foliage is strap-shaped to broad, smooth textured, waxy, usually glaucous
green leaves. The large showy flowers have six tepals (petals and sepals look the same) and tend
to form cups that as the flower ages open up. The fruit is a dry capsule containing numerous flat
disc-shaped seeds.
Grow in well draining soils in full sun and leave the foliage on the plants until it yellows, plants
grow a new bulb each year and the foliage is needed to regrow the bulb for next year. From Seed
plants take 4 to 7 years to bloom. Many nice rock garden species with small flowers and
attractive foliage are available from seed. Seed is a good way to generate a collection of clean
plants. The large hybrids tend to be short lived were spring is short and summer heat come early
in the year.
