Plants have large rounded leaves rising from a deep tap root, and the foliage is the main attraction for me. Plants can flower at a height of well over five feet. Grow in full sun to part shade, in moisture retentive soils. Start seedling off in bright open shade for best growth. A weed in overly grazed locations in high elevations in Eurasia, because of its toxicity when eaten by sheep and cows. Zones 5-8. This species is native from Japan in Asia, north through Russia to Northern and central Europe to Portugal. The first year they have large silver white colored -wholly textured leaves that lay low to the ground. Plants stand out in the landscape with their white powdered wooly leaves and stems topped off with soft medium yellow colored flowers over a few weeks in mid summer. 	'Gentian Speedwell' Plants grow 18 inches tall and produce soft blue flowers in early summer. These plants have larger flowers than other Veronicas and each flower is said to look like a butterfly. Flowers are a very light blue, more an off white with a blue tint to them. The flowers are produced in terminal spikes, with multiple spikes per plant. Plants have large attractive basel leaves that are smooth and dark green with a glossy sheen - making them different from other Veronicas that have leaves with teeth. The basil leaves persist through the winter and form a nice green mat in the spring. The upright stems grow 18 inches tall and the flowers cover 4 to 10 inches of the stems. Easy to grow plants that bloom the second year in early summer. Creeping rootstocks form nice dense mats over a few years. Nice for the front of the boarder and rock garden. The flowers have yellow disk rays and yellow centers. The centers of just opening flowers start off green and as the flowers age yellow stamens will the centers. This species grows well in dry soils in full sun. Zones 6-10, but can be grown as an annual in other zones with an early sowing. Blooms midsummer to late summer, blooming late July and August when grown as a perennial. Native from South-western North America, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada and California. Sow in the fall or while the ground is still cold in the spring. When sowing the seeds in pots or trays use one week at 50-78F then 30 days at 23-38F, then move to 60F for germination. 400 seeds.
