Verbena

A genus of well over 250 species plus many garden hybrids. The species of this genus are native from North and South America with angled stems often and oppositely arranged leaves ( a few with whorles in 3's, and a few alternate) A number of annual and perennial species are grown in cultivation.

The perennials species include tall plants like V. bonariensis, V. corymbosa, V. goodingii, V. hastata, V. rigida and V. stricta.

Short rock garden and edging species include V. bipinnatifida, V. canadensis, V. peruviana, V. bractata.

The annual types sold are perennial/annual hybrids from tropical and semi-tropical zones in Central and South America.

{Glandularia bipinnatifida} 'Great Plains Verbena' or 'Dakota Verbena'

Plants grow 6 to 12 inches tall and can be in bloom from spring till late fall with 5 petaled, pink to purple colored flowers that are 1/2 inch wide. A low growing species that is very drought tolerant. Grow in soils that are nitrogen poor and well draining, in a location in full sun. Butterflies love the abundance of nectar rich flowers. Will not grow were it is hot and humid or soils remain wet for any length of time.

A tender perennial best grown as an annual. Plants have bright lilac-violet flowers with strong stems with the flowers grouped together into terminal clusters. Blooms well the first year. Showy plants best used in a mass effect. Growing best in poor soils, otherwise plants will be very tall (up to 4.5 feet). Self sowns were open ground is available in the spring. Zones 7-9 as a perennial or Zones 3-10 as an annual. Cover seeds with moist seed mix and place in the refrigerator for 20 days, then use 70 F, germination starts in 10-18 days. Darkness needed for best germination.

'Clump Verbena' (ver-BEEN-a:kan-A-den-sis)

Plants grow 10' tall and are long blooming (March-November) with rosy-violet flowers that will bloom the first year from an early sowing. Nice clumping habit but should be grown in well drained to dry soils- they will not survive long in damp locations.

Mostly grown as annuals but hardy in zones 6-10. Native from Virginia to Florida and found growing westward to the Mississippi River. Loved by butterflies. Cover seeds with moist seed mix and place in the refrigerator for 10 days, then use 70 F, germination in 10-18 days. Darkness needed for best germination.

'Moss Verbena'

Low growing plants for well drained, even dry locations in full sun to some shade. Blooms heavy in late spring and keeps blooming until winter. The low growing plants have finely dissected leaves and only grow 3 to 4 inches tall. Late in the year the plants can take on a reddish tint to the foliage and stems. Nice as a ground cover or used in the rock garden, will not take wet soils.
