Loved by wildlife, and attractive in flower and while fruiting. Plants grow into multi-stemmed shrubs 6 to 8(12) feet tall. Grow in part shade to bright open shade, does well in moist soils and makes a nice addition to a shoreline planting. Zones 4-8. Seeds need warm/cold/warm/cold for complete germination. Best germination when sown in a sand bed outside in open shade, keep moist. Cover with a mesh screen to keep rodents from eating the seeds, germination should occur the second spring. To make a sand bed, make a hole 6 to 10 inches (10 in = 25.4 cm) deep and at least 12 inches (12 in = 30.5 cm) wide and fill with a mix of 60 percent washed coarse to medium grained sand and 40 percent compost or leaf litter. The sand bed works very well for seeds that take a long time to germinate, such as woodland wild flowers, peonies, Iris. The bed is best made in an area that can watered once in a while when it is dry and should be in bright open shade or receive up to half day sun. Remove seedlings when large enough to transplant. 50 seeds
