(ross-KOH-ee-uh: aw-rik-yoo-LAY-tuh) Zingiberaceae:
Thick rounded stems with toad-lily like foliage (Could call it
"corn-like" too) and brilliant purple colored flowers that look like orchids. The two lipped
flowers are almost 2 inches long and have white to pale violet markings inside. Plants grow 12
to 16 inches tall, blooming late in the growing season. tuberous "roots" that form slowly
spreading clumps. Plants should flower the third year after sowing. Grow in an open woodland
setting with humus rich, moister retentive but well draining soils. They do not like to grow in hot
soils, so provide a thick mulch to keep the plants cool.
Zones 6-9. Germinates best
under warm moist conditions, use 78F and a moist but not wet soil medium. Takes about 2 to 6
weeks. Very helpful to soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours first. Native from the Eastern
Part of the Himalayan Mountains.
10 seeds.
