Nice bushy, compact growing plants with bluish-green leaves that produce 12-15 inch tall stems with purple-violet(purple-black) colored flowers. I have had some reports of plants growing 36 inches tall and the flowers called almost true black (from a distance). Bloom time is mid May to June. The flowers are short-spurred with stamens that protrude out of the flowers. Grow in light shade to sun in well draining but moisture retentive soils. Plants are best suited for the mid border or mixed with large rocks. The flowers are held well above the foliage and dangle at the ends of the stems. A nice species Aquilegia to grow and easy to raise.
Zone 4-8. The species is native to the Alps in France to Austria and also to the Apennines. Were they inhabit sub-alpine grassy meadows and clearings plus rocky limestone outcroppings. The species name means 'Dark' or 'blackened.' Surface sow seeds onto moist seed mix and seal up n a plastic bag and put in the fridge for three weeks then move to a brightly light location and use F. 70 for germination in 1-3 weeks. One can also sow seeds in a bag with one table spoon of damp seed mix and put in the fridge, then sow into a pot after three weeks for germination.
50 seeds.
