'Blackberry lily' or 'Leapard flower'
Bright yellowish orange flowers with darker orange-red freckles, a stand out. Great cut flower, blooming from June into August. Plants produce clumps with few to many fans of leaves and branched flowering stems with cup-shaped flowers, at flowering plants grow 24-30 inches tall. Attractive seed in late summer with pods of black berries. This Iris relative does best in well drained soils that are low in nitrogen.
Zones (4)5-9. The species is native from Asia and Japan. Lightly cover seeds and keep moist, germination is spread out over 3 months. Easy from seed, plants will bloom the second or third year. Divide clumps every few years. Plants are also grown as an indicator species for the presence of Iris bores.
