'Butterfly Bush' or 'Summer Lilac'
Plants have violet-blue flowers. This fine semi shrub is loved by butterflies. Plants will bloom the first year and have flowers that are somewhat shaped like lilacs except that the flowers are longer and not as wide. Plants grow 72-100 inches tall but will freeze off in the northern part of the country and grow new stems again in the spring. Small shrub like plants in the South. Flowers are produced on new growth-so in the South cutting back the plants in the fall will produce more flowers the next year. Fast growing with silver white leaves and stems. This seed selection consistently produces plants in this color range.
Zone (4)5-8. Zone 4 with good winter cover -- but will not make it every year.
Germination takes 12-18 days at F. 65 Surface sow, seed is small. Fine seed, do not cover, use F 70-80 F, germination starts in 1-2 weeks with some seed germination spread-out over a few weeks. Sealing up in a plastic bag helps very much (Keep bag out of direct sun light to prevent over heating)
