'Harebell or 'Bluebell' (ro-tund-i-FOL-ee-a)
Meaning rounded leaves, in reference to the basal leaves of this species. This is the quintessential rock garden plant growing 12 inches tall when in bloom. The basal foliage forms a mat of those rounded leaves, which produce tall upright flowering stems with this selection producing large white bells. Flowers are bell shaped and dangle in clusters from the ends of the branched stems. This species will form small clumps up to 12 inches wide by way of underground runners and where happy will self seed. They look really nice in short grassy meadows and in rocky screes with small peddles. In the perennial border mix in some sand of varying sizes in the planting hole. They like well drained but moisture retentive soils in full sun to light shade.
