[Campanula allionii] 'Alpine Bellflower' (kam-PAN-yoo-luh: al-PES-triss) Campanulaceae:

Small rock garden plants with many large blue-purple colored, bell shaped flowers. The leaves are long and thin in shape and produced in low growing, loose rosette. The flowers are held 1 to 3 inches above the short foliage. Summer blooming species. Best when grown in well draining, poor soils, in sun with some afternoon shade. A challenging to grow well but one of the easer small mountain species, best in a scree bed with lime free rocks. Choice plants are produced where the roots can find moisture from below or under a rock. Large seeds for a campanula and the seeds have membranous wings.

Zones 5-8

Native from South Western Alps. Sow the seeds in a plastic bag with a table spoon of moist seed mix and allow to sit at room temp for 3 to 6 weeks, then move to the fridge for 6 weeks then to F65. for germination. Or sow in a pot and keep in a sheltered location outside in the fall and winter for germination next spring.
