’Cigarette Plant’ or ’Firecracker Plant’ or b>’Cigar Flower' or ’Cigar Plant' Lythraceae:

Freely branching sub-shrub that grows 12 inches tall with long, thin, round, reddish orange colored flowers. The species name ignea means ‘fire’ and given because of the fiery red colored flowers. The flowers are thin, round and about 1 inch long. They are produced in good numbers over a very long period. Pinch back any long stem ends every few weeks to maintain a full, rounded shape. Plants start flowering about 15 weeks after sowing. Grow in somewhat fertile soils that are well draining, use in full sun and keep moist. Dry conditions produce poorer plants. Where perennial, plants grow about 3 feet tall and about the same in width. can be grown in side in a bright window - use a 10 to 15 inch wide hanging basket.

Perennials in Zones 10 and 11, but grown every were else as an annual or a pot plant. Plants are fast growing from seed.

Native to Mexico and Jamaica. Lightly cover seeds and use 70-78F, with germination in 7 to 12 days.
