Dark-leaved Dahlia
Plants grow 3-4 feet tall and produce 2 inches wide flowers with vibrant colors (scarlet, velvet being most common and includes smokey-purple, bronze-orange, ocher, garnet, and shades of maroon with a few pinks and yellows too). The plants have intense purple foliage. This strain produces almost 100% dark-metallic colored seedlings, with predominantly single flowers but doubles are common too. The flowers are very useful as cut flowers and this selection produces nice garden plants. This selection has good mildew resistance and is reliable long lived, and normally does not need to be staked.
Sow at 70-85F, with germination in 6-15 days. Sow indoors and cover lightly. Lift tubers in the fall and store in a cool location inside over winter.
