'Ice Plant' Aizoaceae:
This more or less evergreen foliaged plant grows 6 to 9 inches tall and reaches a width of 12 to 18 inches. They are some what like small-short growing evergreen shrubs. Blooming heavily in late April and then more or less until frost, they have medium magenta purple colored, daisy like 2 inch wide flowers with yellow centers, the flowers are shaped like large Aster flowers. 'Ice Plants' are drought tolerant and can be used as a ground cover or mixed in with rocks on walls or between paving stones or at the front of the boarder. The foliage is grayish-green in color with long tentacle like, succulent leaves. Should be grown in a well-drained soils and full sun. Drought tolerant plants that have been used in desert plantings.
Native from South Africa. Zones:(5) 6 to 10 (11) Germination in less than two weeks at 65-75ºF Surface sow seeds onto moist, not wet, seed mix and keep at room temps for 3 weeks. If no germination move to fridge for 25 days, then move to 65F. Very helpful to keep the pots or tray in a plastic bag during the above regime.
