'Starburst Ice Plant' This is a succulent ground-cover that grows about 3 inches tall and has 'screaming' magenta (purple-pink) flowers with large, star shaped, cream white colored centers. Plants are drought and heat tolerant with a long bloom period during summer with the flowering starting in June and ending in the fall. Plants will form a clump that can be 8-18 inches wide. Use as a rock garden plant or edging. Mix in with rocks for a nice effect. Grow in well drained soils in full sun. A Plant Select® selection from Denver Botanic Gardens. The species is native from South Africa. Zones (4)5-9. Germination can start in less than two weeks at 65-75ºF Surface sow seeds onto moist, not wet, seed mix and keep at room temps for 3 weeks. If no germination move to fridge for 25 days, then move to 65F. Very helpful to keep the pots or tray in a plastic bag during the above regime. Sometimes germination is spread-out over many weeks if the soil moister is inconsistent. Plants can bloom in 15 weeks from germination. Plants will bloom the first year with an early sowing.
