Blueweed or Blue Thistle or Blue Devil or Viper's Bugloss or Snake Flower
Boraginaceae:
A showy species with blue flowers, but best looked at from a safe distance and not touched because of the sharp spines that cover the plant. The flowers have long exerted stamens and look like Jacob's ladder. Grows 2 to 3.5 feet tall, with a tall upright habit. A good garden subject where there is little water, but it has the ability to escape cultivation. The plant contains alkaloids and the leaves were boiled and made into a tea to relieve fevers and headaches. Blooms from late spring into late summer. Loved by bees and a good subject for that rocky gravely area were few other plants grow.
Biennials
Native to Europe. Can not be imported into the state of Washington where it is a B class noxious weed. Prohibited in Australia and New Zealand.
