'Giant Sea Holly' (e-RING-gee-um: pan-dan-a-FOL-ee-um)

clump forming plants that grow 3 to 6 feet wide and have small Reddish - Purplish brown flowers produced in great numbers on multi branched stems that reach a height of 5 to 9 feet. Sword like leaves are three to four feet long with spiny margins and are almost yucca like with a silver cast to them. Evergreen to 10-15 F under colder conditions plants regrow from the roots in spring. Native from Argentina and parts of Brazil, where it is found on moist grass lands. Flowers are produced in late summer and bloom into mid fall. An impressive plant. Use in full sun in moisture retentive but well draining soils.

Zones (7)8-10 maybe hardier? Plants may be biennials in colder climates -- some comments by those that have grown it include 'The best plant in my garden.' For a tall plant it is said to 'be very wind tolerant.' Sow seeds for 4 weeks at 68 - 74º F, Then move for 6 weeks to the refrigerator. After the cold period move to 50-60ºF for germination in one to three weeks. One of those plants that have that 'wow' factor due to its oddly impressive appearance.

50 seeds.
