'Arctic Gentian' Gentianaceae:
Another low growing species that is 1
to 4 inches tall with creamy white to off yellow colored flowers, some plants with blue -
especially hybrids with other low growing blue species. The flowers are long and have
ribbed sides marked in blue and the inside is often speckled with bluish spotting. Plants
are very low growing with ground hugging basal rosettes of foliage and relatively large
flowers that face upwards. Grow in moisture retentive soils that drain well in full
sun. Blooms late summer and fall.
Zones 3-7. This species is native to alpine
meadows of the Rockies and other high mountain ranges in Western USA in bogs and
wet meadows.
