'Chilean Gunnera' or 'Chilean Rhubarb' or 'Chilean 'Ape Ape' Gunneraceae (Haloragaceae):
Plants grow large and reach a height of 5 to 8 feet tall with up to 6 foot wide leaves. Grow in moist soils in light shade. In the summer, long spikes of rusty-red flowers are produced. A black dye is obtained from the root thus the species name, which means 'used in dyeing'. This species is native to Patagonia in Chile. A very ornamental plant with huge leaves, it forms a slowly spreading dense clump that is quit striking, but needs moisture to perform its best (and space). Slightly smaller than G. manicata with greener colored leaves that have edges that are more serrated.
Zones (7) 8-10.
Use warm and moist conditions for best germination: 75-85F SOIL TEMP, Sow onto moist seed medium and seal pots up in a plastic bag and use bottom heat for ten days. Germination starts in 10 days and may last up to 120+ days.
