'Yellow Waxy Bells' HYDRANGEACEAE.
Clump forming plants with a few large broadly round, palmately lobed, light green leaves. In the fall plants have nodding terminal cymes of large, tubular, thick pale yellow-gold flowers. Plants grow 24-36' tall and 20-30' wide. Grow in moist, acidic soil enriched with leaf mold in partial shade in the wood land garden. A nice plant to add some flower color to the shade garden in the fall, buds begin to form in mid summer and are numerous considering the large size. Plants rise up from a long lived semi-woody root stock that can be divided every three years in the spring. Mix with toad lilies and Barrenworts. Native to Japan.
Zones (4) 5-8. lightly cover seeds and use 65-72ºF, if no germination in 5 weeks move to cooler conditions, were germination will be spread out over many weeks. Do not discard seed trays for at least 14 months.
