(Goldemelisse)'Bergamot' or 'Oswego Tea' or 'Scarlet Beebalm' Lamiaceae:

These plants are the wild species, they have red flowers on plants that grow 2.5 to 3.5 feet tall. Flowering from July to late August, Plants like moist but well draining soils in full sun to part shade. Plants spread-out to form nice clumps that are loved by hummingbirds, butterflies and bees, a must-have in a butterfly garden or wildflower garden. Best flowering in full sun in moisture retentive soils, dry soils and humid air produce weak floppy plants that can be prone to powdery mildew attacks, so use a rich-organic soil and water when dry. Clumps can divided in spring or after flowering, after a few years its often helpful to dig up clumps and replant if your soils are not perfect - remove old woody stems and replant the new stolonifouros shoots. Nice cut flowers and the petals can be dried and retain their red color, but they will not remain attached to the flower. The dried flowers can be soaked in hot water and produce an interesting red color.

Zones 3-9

Native to eastern and central North America were it is found along edges of streams and in wooded locations with moister retentive soils.
