'Spanish lavender' or 'French Lavender' (la-VAN-dew-la STOY-kas) LAMIACEAE.
Plants have deep purple colored flowers and large purple bracts. The flowers are in terminal club like heads that are held just above the foliage. Compact growing, semi-woody plants reach about 15 inches in height and 2 feet wide, they are drought tolerant once established and are hardy in zones 8 to 10. Further north they can be grown as annuals from an early sowing and in the fall cuttings can be made and rooted and over wintered in a bright window. For continued flowering-trim plants back often during the year. Grow in full sun in well draining soils. Native from the Mediterranean were it is found growing on dry hill sides and open woods and scrub areas. Plants have been used medicinally and have fragrant flowers too. They do make great dried flowers for scented sachets. The genus name comes from the word to 'wash' and plants were used in making soaps.
Sow at 70ºF, if no germination in 4 weeks, move to the fridge 28-39ºF for 3 to 6 weeks, then back to 70 F. Surface sow, light needed for best germination which is spread out over a few weeks.
25 seeds.
