'Scarlet Flax' or 'Flowering Flax' or 'Red Flax' (LEEN-um: grand-i-FLOR-um) LINACEAE
This annual flax has brilliant, 1 to 1.5 inch wide, red flowers that bloom in profusion. Each flower lasts for only one day but the plant produces many blossoms all summer. It is both heat and drought resistant and they should be sown in place were you want the plants to grow since they resent root disturbance, use in full sun. Grows 12 to 18 inches tall. The seeds when wet are surrounded my a thick gelatinous coating that helps the seeds germinate in the species native dry environment, the coating absorbs water giving the seedlings some moisture while the first root forms in the soil.
Native from northern Africa and southern Europe and now naturalized throughout the United States.
