The genus name is of Greek origin and means 'A mimic.' The genus has over 400 species. This species is a fun novelty plant with fern like leaves that when touched close up and fold downward. Plants have small thorns and compound leaves like a locust tree. Plants grow 12-30 inches tall and have pinkish-lilac bean like flowers. Tender shrubs from the tropical regions of south and central America. They are frost-tender plants, best grown in full sun and moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Also can be grown as small pot plants for the amusment of children.
Best grown as an annual. Native from Brazil. Min temp F 55. Soak seeds in warm water for 3 days-changing the water every 24 hours with fresh warm water. Sow and cover with 1/8 inch deep with seed mix and use F 80. Germination takes 10-20 days.
