'Ozark Sundrops' or 'Missouri Primrose' or 'Glade Lily' or 'Bigfruit Evening Primrose' Onagraceae:
Plants are shorter than
other yellow species of Oenothera, reaching a height of 7 to 12 inches. The plants produce many
3 to 4 inch wide, yellow colored flowers in early summer with plants blooming from June -
September, and some bloom until hard frost. The flowers open up in the evening and are open
all night, were they are visited by moths, and close sometime before noon. Stems tend to be
some what lax and plants form large spreading clumps that grow to a height of 5 to 8 inches, with
a good amount of basal foliage. The foliage has an undulating habit with long elliptic or
lanceolate-shaped leaves. Grow in full sun and space plants out about 12inches apart in well-
draining soils with a pH between 5.8 - 6.8 . Drought tolerant. Best results in nutrient poor soils,
nitrogen rich soils will produce plants with a lot of soft foliage a fewer flowers. Mixes well with the shorter growing Catmints and Shasta Daisies, effectively used as a mass planting and used as a ground cover amongst large rocks.
