[Penstemon barbatus praecox nanus]
Plants grow about 8 inches tall and bloom very well the first year without any vernalization; this series producing low mounding plants with leathery green leaves. The clumps have short stalks of tubular shaped flowers that are arranged around the stems, blooming during summer. The flowers are a light red color. Deadhead old flowers to promote more blooming. The flowers are attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds, and the stems of flowers are long lasting as cutting material. Clumps can be divided in early spring or midsummer – remove non-blooming stems for rooting in moist sand, best with some rooting hormones. More winter hardy that some other forms in colder regions. The plants are drought tolerant once established and should be grown in full sun in moister retentive but well draining soils.
