'Scarlet Globe-mallow' or 'Caliche Globe-mallow' or 'Red False Mallow' Malvaceae
Perennial plants grow from spreading rhizomes, upright in habit to a height of 6 to12 inches or sometimes sprawling in rich soils. The foliage is densely white-hairy topped off with scarlet colored flowers. Plant produce multi stemmed clumps. Flowers are 2 cm wide and produced in clusters, mallow-like in shape. The foliage is silver cast with many short hairs.
Zones 3-8. Native from the Great Plains and adjoining western states, were it is found on poor dry soils in full sun. Soak seeds in hot water for 24 hours; change the water every 8 hours with new hot water. Sow and use 60-90 days at 32-39F, move to 65F for germination. Sow 1/8inch deep and keep seed tray for a few years, pluck out seedlings when large enough to handle.
