'Baical Skullcap' or 'Baikal Skullcap' or 'Golden Root' (sku-te-LAH-ree-a: bie-ka-LEN-sis)

Dark blue flowers on 12 inch tall plants. The flowers are lightly two-toned with the top being darker. Plants will flower a little the first year from an early sowing, but heavy flowering starts the second year, were plants will bloom from July into late August. Grow in well drained soils in full sun to half day shade. Avoid winter wetness. Plants do best in soils that are made up of many small rocks and low in nitrogen. Germination is spread out over many weeks. Native from Siberia (The species gets its name because it was found around Lake Baikal), Mongolia, China, Japan and Korea. The genus name is a reference to the small cups that many of the plants in this genus form after the flowers are done blooming - the cups hold the developing seeds and form a step ladder like effect up the finished blooming stems.

Zones (4)5-8. Germination in 3-4 weeks at 68F, Germination is spread-out over many weeks. Might help so soak the seeds for 36 hours in hot water, change the water every 12 hours with fresh water. If no germination, use 4 weeks at 33-39F. Grow seedlings out on the cool side, 55-63F.

30 seeds.
