'Lance-leaf Figwort' or 'American Figwort' or 'Western Figwort' or 'Early Figwort' or
'Hare Figwort' Scrophulariaceae:
The flowers are an inch long with reddish to orange
yellowish upper lips and with a yellow-green lower lip. Plants grow 3 to 7 feet tall. Flowering
starts in late spring and continue into mid summer. Many small flowers clustered on short stems
at the top of large leafy plants. Not really a showy plant for the garden but an interesting plant for
the wildflower garden, the flowers remind me of a horse yawing. I use it here and there as a tall
filler plant with my other large plants. I have them in full sun and they are drought tolerant once
established. The thick, up right stems can be cut back early in the year to shorten and fill out the
plants.
Zones 4-9. Native from western and central USA were it is found in Open
woods, and disturbed areas.
100+ seeds.
