'Pincushion Flower' or 'Scabious' DIPSACACEAE.
Perennial with reddish-purplish blue flowers that are 2 to 5 inches wide. The centers are dome-shaped and plants bloom from late spring into late summer. Height and width to 12 to 20 inches, upper leaves deeply cut. Use in full sun to partial shade, well-drainage soils. The foliage has a felt grayish tint to it. Plants are visited by butterflies and Syrphidae. br> Zones(4)5-8. Native from Europe, were it is found on dry, stony grassland in limey soils. 2n=16
