'Golden Crownbeard' or 'Cowpen Daisy' or 'Skunk Daisy' (ver-bes-SIGH-nuh; en-see-lee-OY-deez) Asteraceae:
This annual grows up to 80 cm tall; it grows from a stout taproot. The herbage is densely covered with coarse white hairs. The leaves are oppositely arranged on the lower parts of the stems, alternate above. The leaves are ovate-triangular in shape and coarsely toothed.
Here is a showy, fast-growing annual that is easy to grow and has a sunny display of bright golden daisies in summer and fall. The crushed foliage is pungent. Grows 6 to 18 inches tall. Plants have allelopathic effects and dense stands will prevent the growth of other species. Tolerates alkaline soils, but intolerant of shade - grow in full sun in soils that are not overly dry.
Zones 3-11. Native to North America and the Caribbean.
