Acinos - Calamint

A genus of 10 species native to mountainous areas in Europe and Asia, they are annuals and evergreen to semi-evergreen perennials. The small mid-green foliage is scented and arranged oppositely on the spreading woody stems. The flowers are 2-lipped and tubular in shape produced in upright spikish whorles. Only one species is commonly grow, Acinos alpina, which is best suited for a rock garden or used as an edging or low ground cover plant at the front of a border. The annual or short lived perennial Acinos arvensis has attractive blue flowers produced along the stems, plants grow maybe 8 inches tall and 12 inches wide, it will only overwinter in zones 7-9.
